Retention

Essix RetainerWhen we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. We will continue to see you for retainer checkups for a period of 16 months. We look at retention as being a lifelong committment if you want your teeth to look as good in twenty years as they do the day your braces are removed. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far.

Remember to remove your upper retainer before brushing, and brush your retainer before placing it back in your mouth. Be aware of your lower permanent retainer and if any of the bonding spots become loose call our office to schedule a repair appointment as soon as possible.

When you take the retainer out, remember to:

  • Brush it
  • Rinse it
  • Place it back in its case
  • Make sure you keep it in the case when you are not wearing it.
  • Make sure you don't leave your retainer in a warm place...they are plastic and can change shape.

Lower Fixed Retainers

Lower Fixed RetainerFixed lower retainers are cemented directly to the inside surface of the left cuspid continuing around to the right cuspid. This is one of the best ways to prevent your lower teeth from shifting as it is permanently attached! Patients with fixed lower retainers must be careful with their bite as the bonding material may break due to incorrect biting and cause teeth to shift quickly. As with removable retainers, it is important to keep them clean. When brushing, make sure to carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth as well as the wire.

Call or e-mail Dr. Stich if you lose or break your retainer.
